Despite the relatively small size of this island, Singapore's history is very rich. Very few remember what Singapore was like prior to the arrival of the British. An older generation of people who live in Malaysia still consider Singapore to lawfully be a part of their country. Long ago, it was part of a powerful Buddhist Kingdom, and was known as the "sea port". Ancient Persian sailors had once called this land the "Leeward". Trades have flourished during these times, and merchants flocked with their goods on this land.
The British that came to Singapore in the early nineteenth century, led by Sir Raffles, first climbed the hill with their ambitions, which the locals revered as sacred. Today, one of the best hotels in Singapore is named after him.The culture of Peranakan or Baba Nenya, its second name, is an important page in the history of Singapore as well. Chinese emigrants, mostly single men, settled in these lands, from the thirteenth century, and took local women as wives. Hence, over time new ethnic alliances were formed, eradicating single identities, and a new culture was born: a fusion of Chinese, Malay and Indonesian traditions. You will certainly learn about what remains of this milestone today at the end of this fascinating tour to Singapore.
