The archipelago of 99 tropical islands including Langkawi Island is located in the northwest part of Malaysia, washed by the azure waters of the Andaman Sea. It's only 7 degrees north of the equator with a tropical climate and the annual average temperature of about 26-28 degrees. Langkawi is the largest island of the archipelago, closely equivalent to size of Singapore. The distance from Langkawi Island to Thailand is just a 45-minute ferry ride. As for prices on the island, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to discover that the island is a duty-free zone.

There are many versions behind the origin of the name of Langkawi. According to one interpretation, Langkawi means island of the red-brown eagle in colloquial Malay. The Malay word for eagle is helang - which is shortened to "lang," while kawi is the name of a red stone used as a chalk to mark goods. This interpretation was used to create the landmark sculpture of an eagle as the symbol of Langkawi at Dataran Lang (Eagle Square) in Kuah.

However, it is widely believed that Langkawi is also the same as the Lanka or Langkapuri mentioned in Indian sources. The name is thought to be related to Langkasuka, an old kingdom thought by some to have links with Kedah, and puri means a castle with a moat or a palace. Some also thought that Langkawi means "many beautiful islands," langka being a Sanskrit word meaning "beautiful" while wi means "many".

In 2008, it was given the title of Langkawi Permata Kedah meaning "Langkawi, the Jewel of Kedah" in 2008 by Kedah's Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah as part of his golden jubilee to impress upon tourists that Langkawi is part of Kedah.

This island offers countless activities and adventures; you can swim in the sea and the waterfalls, sunbathe on the deck of a yacht, splash around in a Jacuzzi, go fishing, wander through the mangroves and feed the huge, beautiful eagles, go scuba diving, enjoy the nature, travel to different islands, or ride the Flying Fox at an altitude of several hundred meters over the jungle.

It may seem like time has stopped when you’re enjoying your vacation on this island. It’s as if you’re in a fairytale where you’re greeted with smiles and all your desires are fulfilled as you’re lounging on a hammock at sandy beach, enjoying the sound of the waves and the rustle of palm trees. During the night, you will find the skies showered with bright stars, and in these moments, everything seems to be perfect.

Best time for a visit: Langkawi can be visited throughout the year, but most resorts may be closed during the monsoon season - September and October are especially rainy.
