KUALA LUMPUR INTERNATIONAL ARTS FESTIVAL DiverseCity 2016

From August 31st to October 2nd, Kuala Lumpur will be the center of the Kuala Lumpur International Arts Festival. The festival, also known as DiverseCity - first exploded onto the regional cultural scene in September 2015. Held for 5 weeks every year across multiple venues in Kuala Lumpur and greater KL, the ambitious program of performing and visual arts in each year of DiverseCity will showcase the complex, rich and nuanced diversity of Malaysia and explore our close ties and deep relationship with ASEAN. The festival will consist of various concerts, performances, showcases, and workshops, which will encompass performance, visual and literary arts. With the participation of world-famous artsists and performers, DiverseCity 2016 will amaze every visitor and spectator.

 

 

Here are a few of the many performances that will take place during the Kuala Lumpur International Arts Festival.

 

1. KING OF GHOSTS - SOUMIK DATTA ARTS  
  

This breathtaking, unique cinematic collaboration was originally produced by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the Edinburgh Mela festival, and rising world music star Soumik Datta, who has worked with Beyonce, Nitin Sawhney, Talvin Singh and Bill Bailey.

2. BANGSAWAN: PELAYARAN PANGLIMA AWANG

Bangsawan is traditional Malay opera or theatre brought to life in this collaboration with our National Department for Culture and Arts and City Hall, Kuala Lumpur. The story is about a Malay warrior, "Panglima Awang" (Henry the Black) who was captured by the Portugese during a battle in Malacca. The wise Panglima Awang was eventually appointed by Captain Maggalen as his assistant and saved Captain Maggalen numerous times from being killed. In the end, Captain Maggalen was killed by the followers of Tawi-Tawi Ruler during the opening of a new colony in Philippines whilst Panglima Awang survived the battle.

3. FEET ON FIRE

In olden times, the ancient gypsy tribes from Rajasthan, India celebrated the art of sharing tales through singing and dancing. These storytellers known as Kathakars travelled throughout Asia into the Middle East - sharing their art across foreign lands - creating a new amalgam that eventually became Flamenco.

4. NARI: THE SHANKAR FAMILY PROJECT

An Official Selection of the Toronto International Film Festival, Nari is the unsung story of the lives of Lakshmi Shankar and her daughter Viji, two extraordinary artists who helped bring Indian music to the West in the 1970s through their close collaborations with Ravi Shankar and George Harrison. Nari begins with a 10 minute short film live narrated by Gingger which takes the audience on an emotional journey through Viji and Lakshmi's lives. Using never before seen archival footage, interviews and photographs from their tours and family footage, viewers get a rare and unique glimpse into this incredible family told through the women's voices.

5. LALA LUNA

LaLaLuna is circus, theatre and film woven together with a poetic and comic physical language all its own. Beloved by audiences around the planet, LaLaLuna is the joyful solo creation from one of today's masters of physical theatre, Wolfe Bowart.

6. ANDY WARHOL: SOCIAL CIRCUS

For the first time in Malaysia, a rare collection of Andy Warhol polaroids of the world's biggest actors, artists and fashion designers from the 70s and 80s, will be on display during DiverseCity 2016. The brainchild of lawyer and art collector Ryan Su, founder of the Ryan Foundation, 'Andy Warhol: Social Circus' is the largest collection of Andy Warhol Polaroids to be shown in Malaysia and Asia.
