b3dd73aa356a2c36c8d1540b7fd85e1fThe archipelago of 99 tropical islands including the island of Langkawi is located in the northwest part of Malaysia and washed by the azure waters of the Andaman Sea. It's only 7 degrees north of the equator with tropical climate and annual average temperatures of about 26-28 degrees. Langkawi is the largest island of the archipelago almost equal to Singapore in size. The distance to Thailand from here is just 45 minutes by ferry. As for the prices on the island, they will pleasantly surprise you because the island is a duty free zone.

There are many versions for the origin of the name of Langkawi. According to one interpretation, Langkawi means island of the reddish-brown eagle in colloquial Malay. The Malay word for eagle is helang - which is shortened to "lang", while kawi is the name of a red stone used as a chalk to mark goods. This interpretation was used to create the landmark sculpture of an eagle as the symbol of Langkawi at Dataran Lang (Eagle Square) in Kuah.

It is however widely believed that Langkawi is also the same as the Lanka or Langkapuri mentioned in Indian sources. The name is thought to be related to Langkasuka, an old kingdom thought by some to have links with Kedah, and puri means a castle with a moat or a palace. Some also thought that Langkawi means "many beautiful islands", langka being a Sanskrit word meaning "beautiful" while wi means "many".

In 2008, it was given the title of Langkawi Permata Kedah meaning "Langkawi, the Jewel of Kedah" in 2008 by Kedah's Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah as part of his golden jubilee to impress upon tourists that Langkawi is part of Kedah.
Here you can swim in the sea and numerous waterfalls, take sunbathing on the deck of a yacht, "gurgle" in the whirlpool, go fishing, wander through the mangroves to feed the huge beautiful eagles, go scuba diving, enjoy the unique nature, travel to the islands, ride a "bungee" at an altitude of several hundred meters over the jungle and just spend time at your own pleasure.
In Langkawi time simply freezes... You find yourself in a fairytale where everybody gives you sweet smiles and is ready to fulfill your every desire while you are lying in a hammock, on a huge white sandy beach enjoying the sound of the waves and the rustle of palm fronds. At night you can find yourself counting bright stars of the equatorial sky, and life in these moments seems to be just perfect...
Best time for a visit: Throughout the year, but September and early October can be rather rainy.
