The Perhentian Islands sit off the coast of Terengganu, a 30 to 45 minute speedboat ride from Kuala Besut jetty, and are made up of two main islands: Perhentian Kecil, the smaller, livelier backpacker island, and Perhentian Besar, the larger, calmer family island. Clear water, blacktip reef sharks, green turtles and coral gardens make this one of the best snorkeling destinations in Malaysia, and a typical Perhentian island package pairs a full-board resort stay with two guided boat snorkeling trips.
A standard Perhentian island package includes the return speedboat from Kuala Besut, full-board meals at your resort, two boat snorkeling trips with mask, fins and life jacket, and equipment. The Terengganu Marine Park conservation fee is paid separately at the Kuala Besut jetty counter. We book the whole journey, KBR or TGG airport pickup, jetty transfer and boat tickets, so your only job on arrival is to find your seat on the boat.

How to get there: fly to Kota Bharu (KBR) then a 45 to 60 minute private transfer to Kuala Besut jetty, fly to Kuala Terengganu (TGG) then about two hours, or take the overnight coach from TBS Kuala Lumpur (7 to 9 hours). Speedboats run roughly 8am to 5pm only, with no night crossings, so we plan your flights around the last boat. The 2026 season runs early March to late October: April to June is calmest with the best visibility, July and August is peak so book four to six weeks ahead, and the islands close November to February for the monsoon.
