Kuala Lumpur Airport Transfer Guide: KLIA to the City

November 2, 2026Emily Parker15 min read

The fastest Kuala Lumpur airport transfer is the KLIA Ekspres train: 28 minutes non-stop from KLIA Terminal 1 to KL Sentral, at RM55 one way for adults until 31 December 2026. If you are a family, a group, arriving late or staying away from KL Sentral, a pre-booked car, Grab or an airport taxi to your door usually works better, at about 50 to 60 minutes by road.

This guide compares every way from KLIA to the city: trains, coaches, e-hailing, taxis and private transfers. Fares and timetables were checked against operator and official sources on 30 October 2026. They change, and KLIA rail fares rise on 1 January 2027, so treat every price here as indicative.

01

Quick answer: KLIA to Kuala Lumpur

Travelling light to a hotel near KL Sentral? Take the KLIA Ekspres: 28 minutes from Terminal 1, trains every 20 minutes, RM55 adult one way (RM65 from 1 January 2027). For door-to-door travel with luggage, children or a late flight, book a private transfer or use Grab from the official pickup zones. Budget travellers can take a coach for roughly RM10 to RM12.

02

Kuala Lumpur airport transfer options compared

KLIA is about 55 km south of central Kuala Lumpur, in Sepang. Every option below runs from both terminals, but they drop you in very different places.

The real comparison is door to door. The train is fastest to KL Sentral, but most hotels in KLCC, Bukit Bintang or Chinatown need a second leg, which matters when you have suitcases and tired children.

03

KLIA Terminal 1 or Terminal 2?

Kuala Lumpur International Airport has two passenger terminals: Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, the building formerly called klia2. Terminal 2 is the main base for AirAsia and other low-cost airlines, while Malaysia Airlines and most full-service carriers use Terminal 1. Always check the terminal on your booking, because allocations change.

The two terminals are separate buildings linked by the airport rail line. The hop takes about three minutes and costs RM2 for adults and RM1 for children aged 6 to 15. If you are connecting between separately booked flights, allow time for baggage, the transfer and a fresh check-in.

Flying into Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang (SZB) instead? There is no airport train there, so plan on a car. Embassy Alliance's Kuala Lumpur transfer rates apply to KLIA, Terminal 2 and Subang alike.

04

KLIA Ekspres: the fastest train to KL Sentral

The KLIA Ekspres runs non-stop between KLIA Terminal 1 and KL Sentral in 28 minutes, with trains every 20 minutes throughout the day. Trains from Terminal 2 call at Terminal 1 first, which adds about three minutes. The first trains leave the airport at about 5am and the last scheduled departures run around midnight; after 11pm, services call at all stations.

From 1 January 2027 the child fare between KL Sentral and the airport becomes RM29 one way and RM53 return, as reported by Malay Mail on the Express Rail Link fare revision. Children under six travel free, up to three per paying adult, but their free tickets must be collected at a counter.

Ways to pay less

  • Book online: the operator offers 10% off tickets bought through its app or website.
  • Family Package: listed from RM120 one way for two adults and two children, against RM160 at standard fares.
  • Group Saver: listed at RM40 per person one way for three or more people travelling together.

Offers change, so check the operator's current promotions before you buy.

From KL Sentral to your hotel

KL Sentral is a transport hub, not the end of the journey for most visitors. The LRT Kelana Jaya Line runs to KLCC for the Petronas Twin Towers and one stop to Pasar Seni for Chinatown, while the KL Monorail serves Bukit Bintang. With heavy bags, many travellers simply take a taxi or Grab from KL Sentral instead.

05

KLIA Transit: for Putrajaya and stations en route

KLIA Transit uses the same tracks but stops at Salak Tinggi, Putrajaya and Cyberjaya, and Bandar Tasik Selatan before KL Sentral. The full run from Terminal 2 to KL Sentral takes 39 minutes. Trains run every 15 minutes at weekday peaks and every 30 minutes off-peak and at weekends.

It costs the same as the KLIA Ekspres to KL Sentral, so it only makes sense for the intermediate stations. Staying in Putrajaya or Cyberjaya? The RM9.40 adult fare makes it the obvious choice. Tickets are valid for 90 minutes from entry to exit.

06

Airport buses: the cheapest way into the city

Coach operators including Airport Coach, Aerobus and Skybus run from the bus station at Terminal 1 to KL Sentral, with fares of roughly RM10 to RM12 one way when we checked. Terminal 2 services leave from its Transportation Hub. Buy tickets at the bus counters and allow around an hour and a quarter, more at rush hour.

Coaches suit solo travellers with flexible plans. They are less suited to families with several bags, late-night arrivals or anyone with a fixed meeting, and you still need onward transport from KL Sentral. Check the operator's timetable before relying on a late bus.

Grab and e-hailing from KLIA

Grab estimates RM65 to RM100 and about 50 minutes between the airport and the city centre, depending on demand and car type. Its standard cars take up to four passengers with two checked bags; the 6-seater takes six people, or four with extra luggage. Compare live prices on Grab's KLIA airport rides page before you land.

Where to meet your driver

  • Terminal 1: the designated pickup bays on Level 1 of the main terminal building; follow the e-hailing signs and the in-app directions.
  • Terminal 2: the Transportation Hub.

Since 16 September 2026, Malaysia Airports charges a flat RM2 entry fee for each e-hailing vehicle at both terminals, and drivers get a 10-minute window to collect you. Order once you have your bags, then go straight to the bay. Details are in Malay Mail's report on the standardised KLIA e-hailing fee.

Important: Grab advance bookings (up to 90 days ahead, with a scheduling fee) suit departures better than arrivals. Drivers wait up to 15 minutes past the booked time, and a slow immigration queue can easily take longer than that.

08

Airport taxis

Official airport taxis and limousines are sold through counters in the arrival halls after customs, run by Airport Limo under a coupon system. Tell the counter your exact hotel address, then confirm the total, whether tolls are included and whether a late-night surcharge applies before you pay.

Taxis are useful when your phone has no data or the e-hailing queue is long. Ignore anyone offering rides inside the arrivals hall; use the counters, a recognised app or a transfer you booked in advance.

Private Kuala Lumpur airport transfer

A pre-booked private Kuala Lumpur airport transfer is the simplest arrival: a driver meets you after customs and takes you straight to your hotel. It costs more than the train for one or two people, but the gap narrows as your group grows because you pay per vehicle, not per seat, and it removes the change at KL Sentral.

Embassy Alliance lists private transfers in Kuala Lumpur with fixed per-vehicle rates. According to that page, every airport pickup includes meet and greet with a name board, flight tracking and a 30-minute waiting grace period after landing, and child seats are free on request.

Group sizeVehicleRate
1 to 2 peopleStandard car or vanUSD 50
3 to 7 peopleStandard car or vanUSD 84
8 to 13 peopleStandard vanUSD 226
1 to 5 peopleComfort vanUSD 114
1 to 5 peopleVIP vanUSD 120

The same page lists a 50% night surcharge between 22:00 and 07:00 and a 20% peak-season surcharge from 24 December to 2 January. Rates can change, so confirm when you book.

What to confirm before you book

  • Flight and terminal: your flight number and arrival terminal, so the driver can track delays.
  • People and luggage: the number of passengers, large suitcases, strollers and any oversized items.
  • Meeting point: whether the driver meets you inside arrivals with a sign or at a kerbside bay.
  • Waiting and delays: how long the driver waits and what happens if your flight is late or cancelled.
  • The full address: the hotel's street address, not just its name, as several brands have more than one Kuala Lumpur property.

Families, groups and business travellers

Families

Compare the whole journey. For four people, a Grab car at roughly RM65 to RM100 can cost less than four train tickets (RM160, or RM120 with the Family Package) and goes to the door. Standard cars take only two checked bags, though, so bigger families need a 6-seater or a van; ask for child seats when you book.

Business and VIP

If time on arrival matters most, our VIP airport services in Kuala Lumpur add fast-track tiers from USD 55 per person, with express immigration lanes for business-class arrivals, and a chauffeured car waiting kerbside.

12

Late-night and early-morning flights

Airport trains stop running around midnight, and the last listed KLIA Transit departure from Terminal 2 leaves at 00:30. If you land after about 11pm, plan on a car: a pre-booked transfer, Grab or an official taxi. Expect higher prices late at night, whichever you choose.

Base pickup times on landing time plus immigration and baggage, not on the scheduled arrival alone. Before you fly, check whether you need to complete Malaysia's digital arrival card and keep your transfer confirmation available offline.

For early departures, the first trains leave KL Sentral at about 5am. Flights before roughly 7am usually call for a car, booked the day before. If you are only in town for a night or two, the Kuala Lumpur stopover package bundles airport transfers, two nights' accommodation and a city tour.

13

Common airport transfer mistakes

  1. Booking the wrong terminal. Check your airline's terminal before you book a pickup.
  2. Choosing a car by seats alone. A 6-seater rarely takes six people and six large cases.
  3. Assuming the train reaches your hotel. It stops at KL Sentral, not KLCC or Bukit Bintang.
  4. Pre-booking an app ride too tightly. Short waiting windows do not allow for long queues.
  5. Accepting rides from touts. Use counters, apps or your confirmed provider.
  6. Forgetting the return. Arrange your departure transfer before your last day, especially for early flights.

Frequently Asked Questions

Grab's own estimate for the airport to the city centre is about RM65 to RM100, depending on demand and car type. Official airport taxis are sold at counters in the arrival halls, so ask for the total, including tolls and any late-night surcharge, before you pay. A private transfer with Embassy Alliance starts at USD 50 per vehicle for one or two people.

Yes. From 1 January 2027 the adult fare between KL Sentral and KLIA rises from RM55 to RM65 one way and to RM118 return, the first revision since 2016. The child fare becomes RM29 one way. Express Rail Link has said it is working with partners on discounts of up to 30%, with details still to be announced.

An airport coach to KL Sentral is the cheapest option, at roughly RM10 to RM12 one way from Terminal 1 when checked in October 2026. It takes around an hour and a quarter, depending on traffic, and you will need onward transport from KL Sentral. For two adults and two children, the KLIA Ekspres Family Package can also be good value.

Take the airport train between the two terminals. The ride takes about three minutes and costs RM2 for adults and RM1 for children aged 6 to 15, and the fare stays at RM2 after the 2027 revision. Allow extra time if you need to collect bags and check in again for a separately booked flight.

Yes. Embassy Alliance states that every airport pickup includes a driver with a name board, flight tracking and a 30-minute waiting grace period after landing. Child and booster seats are available free on request. Give your flight number, terminal and luggage details when you book so the right vehicle is assigned.

Plan on road transport, because airport trains stop around midnight. A transfer booked in advance is the most predictable option, and Embassy Alliance applies a 50% night surcharge between 22:00 and 07:00. Grab and official airport taxis also operate late, though prices are usually higher at night. Keep your hotel address saved offline.

Allow about 50 to 60 minutes to central Kuala Lumpur in normal traffic for the roughly 55 km drive. Weekday rush hours, heavy rain and public holidays can add significantly to that. If you have a fixed appointment on arrival day, the KLIA Ekspres gives a more predictable time to KL Sentral.

Book your Kuala Lumpur airport transfer

The right Kuala Lumpur airport transfer depends on where you are staying, how many of you there are and when you land. Take the KLIA Ekspres if you travel light to KL Sentral; book a car if you want to go straight to your door.
