Kuala Lumpur to Cameron Highlands Day Trip Guide

November 2, 2026Emily Parker11 min read

A day trip from Kuala Lumpur to Cameron Highlands is possible, but only by car and only with an early start. Tourism Malaysia puts the drive at about three hours each way, so plan on a 12-hour day with four to five hours in the highlands for a tea garden, a farm or two and lunch.

By public transport it does not work as a day trip: the express bus takes four to five hours, and the first morning departures reach Tanah Rata around lunchtime. This guide covers realistic travel times, the two mountain roads, what fits into one day, when an overnight stay is the better call, and what to wear. Details were checked on 30 October 2026.

01

Quick answer: can you do it in a day?

Yes, by private car or self-drive. Leave Kuala Lumpur by 7am, allow about three to four hours each way, and limit yourself to three or four stops, such as a BOH tea garden, a strawberry or honey farm and lunch in Tanah Rata. If you want trails, the Mossy Forest or a slower pace, stay overnight.

Kuala Lumpur to Cameron Highlands: transport compared

The highland towns of Ringlet, Tanah Rata and Brinchang are roughly 200 km north of Kuala Lumpur. Most of the drive is fast expressway; the last stretch is a winding mountain road.

Route: Kuala Lumpur → Tapah → Ringlet → Tanah Rata → Brinchang

By car: the only practical day trip

Head north on the North-South Expressway (E1), then choose one of two roads up into the hills. BOH Tea, which has farmed here for decades, describes them like this on its guide to getting to and around Cameron Highlands:

Via Tapah (Route 59)

Exit at Tapah (Exit 132). About 60 km and 1.5 to 2 hours of mountain road, the oldest route, with tight bends and roadside stops such as Lata Iskandar Waterfall. It reaches Ringlet and Tanah Rata first.

Via Simpang Pulai (Route 185)

Exit at Simpang Pulai (Exit 137), near Ipoh. About 80 km, similar driving time, but wider and less winding. The better choice for anyone prone to motion sickness; it arrives at the Brinchang end.

A good plan for a day trip is up via Tapah and back via Simpang Pulai, or the reverse, so you see both. Do not trust a navigation app's best-case time: slow lorries, rain, mist and weekend traffic on the mountain sections add real minutes.

If you would rather not drive, Embassy Alliance runs a guided Cameron Highlands day trip from Kuala Lumpur. We list it as a 12-hour excursion starting at 8am, with an English-speaking guide, transport, mineral water and entrance tickets along the route.

04

By bus: fine for a stay, not for a day

CS Travel & Tours and Unititi Express run direct coaches from Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS) in Kuala Lumpur to Tanah Rata bus terminal. The journey takes about four to five hours, and one-way fares on booking platforms were under RM50 when we checked.

The catch is the timetable. Listed first departures from TBS are around 8:15am to 8:30am, which puts you in Tanah Rata at about lunchtime, and the last buses back leave in the late afternoon. That leaves a few hours in town and arrival back in Kuala Lumpur late at night. BOH also notes that e-hailing is not widely available in the highlands and taxis can be expensive, so moving between attractions without a car is slow.

The bus is a good, cheap way to arrive for a night or two. Book seats in advance at weekends and during school holidays, and confirm times with the operator, as schedules change.

05

By train: there is no direct line

The nearest stations are Tapah Road and Ipoh on the KTM ETS line. Tapah Road station is outside Tapah town, which is where the mountain road begins, so you still need a taxi, a pre-booked car or a local bus for the climb. With two legs and limited connections, the train only makes sense if you are staying overnight or combining Cameron Highlands with Ipoh.

What fits into one day

With four to five hours in the highlands, pick one stop from each group below rather than trying to see everything.

TimePlan
7:00amLeave Kuala Lumpur and head north on the E1
9:00am to 9:30amLeave the expressway at Tapah and start the climb; short stop at Lata Iskandar Waterfall
10:30am to 12:00pmBOH tea garden: viewpoint, tea and the factory if open
12:00pm to 1:00pmLunch in Tanah Rata or Brinchang
1:15pm to 3:00pmA strawberry, honey or lavender farm, and Kea Farm market for produce
3:00pm to 3:30pmStart back, ideally via Simpang Pulai
7:00pm to 8:00pmArrive back in Kuala Lumpur

Tea gardens

BOH's Sungei Palas tea garden near Brinchang is the classic stop, with a café, viewing balcony and factory tours. BOH lists its tea gardens as open Tuesday to Sunday, 8:30am to 4:30pm, and closed on Mondays except during school and public holidays; check BOH's tea garden opening hours before a Monday trip.

Farms and markets

Strawberry, honey and lavender farms, butterfly gardens and produce stalls cluster along the main road around Brinchang and Kea Farm, a short drive north of Tanah Rata. This guide to the best strawberry farms in Cameron Highlands helps you choose one.

Mossy Forest: check before you go

The Mossy Forest boardwalk on the slopes of Gunung Brinchang is one of the highlands' best-known nature stops, but access has been unreliable. It closed in early 2025 after a landslide, and it was left out when Pahang reopened its other eco-forest parks on 1 February 2026. Confirm the current status with the Pahang Forestry Department's Mossy Forest page or a licensed local guide before building a day around it.

07

Day trip or overnight stay?

A day trip works ifStay overnight if
You have a car, a driver or a guided excursionYou are relying on buses or trains
You want the highlights: tea, a farm, lunchYou want jungle trails, the Mossy Forest or sunrise over the tea
Your group is fine with about seven hours of drivingAnyone gets car sick, or you have young children
It is not a Monday, when BOH's gardens usually closeYou plan to continue to Ipoh or Penang

An overnight stay turns a long, rushed day into an easy one. You can visit a tea garden early in the morning, walk a trail, and drive the mountain road in daylight. Cameron Highlands also sits naturally between Kuala Lumpur and Penang, so it works well as a stop on a longer route, as in our 7-day Malaysia itinerary through Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Langkawi.

Heading on to Ipoh instead? The Simpang Pulai road comes down close to the city, and our Ipoh heritage excursion covers its old town, a cave temple and Kellie's Castle.

Weather and what to wear

Tourism Malaysia describes a climate of 15 to 25°C all year, and Tanah Rata sits at about 1,440 metres. It feels much cooler than Kuala Lumpur, especially early in the morning and when the mist rolls in. Rain is possible in any month; historically, October, November and April are the wettest.

  • Layers: a light fleece or jacket over a T-shirt handles the morning chill and the warmer midday.
  • Rain protection: a packable rain jacket or compact umbrella.
  • Footwear: closed shoes with grip for tea garden paths and farm slopes, which turn muddy after rain.
  • For the drive: motion sickness tablets taken before the climb, water and snacks.

Tips for a smoother day

  1. Leave early. A 7am start is the single biggest factor in how much you see.
  2. Travel on a weekday if you can. Weekends and holidays mean busier mountain roads and more crowded farms.
  3. Avoid Mondays for tea. BOH's gardens usually close on Mondays outside school and public holidays.
  4. Do not plan around the Mossy Forest until you have confirmed it is open.
  5. Arrange transport for the whole day. Getting a car between attractions on the spot is unreliable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tourism Malaysia gives about three hours by car. In practice, allow three to four hours each way from central Kuala Lumpur to Tanah Rata, depending on traffic, weather and which mountain road you take. The final 60 to 80 km of winding road takes 1.5 to 2 hours on its own, so it is slower than the distance suggests.

Yes. CS Travel & Tours and Unititi Express run direct coaches from Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS) to Tanah Rata, taking about four to five hours. One-way fares on booking platforms were under RM50 in October 2026. The first buses leave TBS around 8:15am to 8:30am, so the bus suits an overnight stay better than a day trip.

Not reliably. BOH Tea, which operates in the highlands, notes that e-hailing services are not widely available and advises arranging transport in advance. Local taxis exist but can be expensive on the hilly roads. If you arrive by bus, book a half-day or full-day local tour, or arrange a driver before you travel.

Check before you go. The Mossy Forest eco-park has closed several times, including after a landslide in January 2025, and it was excluded when Pahang reopened its other eco-forest parks on 1 February 2026. Contact the Pahang Forestry Department or a licensed local guide for its current status before planning your day around it.

Usually not. BOH lists its tea gardens as open Tuesday to Sunday from 8:30am to 4:30pm, and closed on Mondays except during school and public holidays. If your only free day is a Monday, you can still enjoy the views from the road and visit farms, markets and cafés in Tanah Rata and Brinchang.

Neither is always better. The Tapah road (Route 59) is the classic route, about 60 km of tight bends past Lata Iskandar Waterfall. The Simpang Pulai road (Route 185) is about 80 km but wider and less winding, so it suits passengers prone to motion sickness. Both take roughly 1.5 to 2 hours from the expressway.

Yes, and it is a better use of the drive. The Simpang Pulai road descends near Ipoh, and Penang is further north on the same expressway, so Cameron Highlands works well as an overnight stop between Kuala Lumpur and Penang. Embassy Alliance can quote the transfers and runs a guided Ipoh day trip from Kuala Lumpur.
